Please devote November's critical mass to Jehangir Merchant, fondly known to friends as "JJ". He was my nephew in-law. JJ had only recently taken up cycling as his means of transportation to and from work and family in Kanata. Last Wednesday at 10pm he was killed by bus #118 on Abbeyhill Road while cycling home from dinner with his grandmother and great grandmother.

I cycle every day and have be devoted to cycling for years. When I last saw JJ a month ago I was please he had started cycling. I asked him about his distance when I saw him a month ago but not about safety.

His last conversation was with his 97 year old great grandmother. She asked him why he didn't have a car. He said he couldn't afford it. Worried about his safety traveling by bike, she planned to find him the money to buy a car.

This should not have happened. JJ was a great musician who was supposed to play with his band the Bluestones on Barrymore's on Saturday. Instead the same crowd was at his funeral.

I'll join you if I can but I'm finding it difficult to ride again. We need to reclaim the road.

I will probably be there, it will be my first Critical Mass, I'm curious though what the average speed of one of these is? I tend to average at about 20 Kph but max at 30 in bursts. Will I be able to keep up?

hey lindsey i think that's a good idea to dedicated critical mass to your newphew. that is a sad story. some places have a specific ride to commemorate fallen cyclists. but you are right, even though we may need to take time individually when something like this happens, the more of us on the roads the better, in the long term. we need to reclaim the streets. i'm not in ottawa now but i'll let the people in vancouver know about this.

thanks for sharing

hey nathan,

you will definitely be able to keep up! The mass moves slow (probably under 20kph?), and it's social and fun and not at all competetive. :D
